Statement:

American sculptor Seward Johnson is represented by his three-part work titled Comprehension. Following the lively commentary on last year’s Johnson sculpture, the monumental nurse and sailor kissing called “Unconditional Surrender,” the artist is inviting continued dialogue with the community about the purpose and aesthetics of public art. Comprehension includes two of Johnson’s familiar hyperrealistic figures as they ponder the artistic merit of another sculpture – a giant tooth. By commenting on art within art, Johnson sets up a dynamic conversation in which the viewer can participate.
