Board of Directors

As you review the following brief biographies of the volunteers who come together to serve on the Sarasota Season of Sculpture Board of Directors, you will see how fortunate the community is to have these individuals freely donate their time, experience, and knowledge in various areas to make Season of Sculpture such a success for Sarasota.  Each year our Season of Sculpture brings visitors from around the world to view and experience the “art on the bay.”

SUSAN L. McLEOD

Chair of the Board

Susan has lived in the Sarasota community since 1971.  In the early to mid-1980′s she owned and operated the Susan McLeod Gallery at St. Armands Circle.  The featured artists were products of the American Studio Glass movement, as well as European artists.  She founded the First Annual Glass Invitational in Sarasota. Currently, Susan is a realtor with Michael Saunders & Co., a perennial top producer, and an expert in luxury upscale waterfront properties.  Her involvement in giving back to the community has included board positions with the French Film Festival, Advisory Board to Mote Marine Laboratories, the Asolo Theatre, the Humane Society of Sarasota, and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

R. ANDREW (“ANDY”) MAASS

Vice Chair of the Board

Andy brings a 30-year career as an art museum director to Sarasota Season of Sculpture.  Andy served as the Director of the Mississippi Museum of Art for six years, before retiring in 2001.  Other museums Andy led are: the Tampa Museum of Art, the Tucson Museum of Art, and the Fresno ArtsCenter.  Andy is a recognized leader having served on the governing Council of the American Association of Museum, President of the Western Regional Conference of Museums and, later, the Florida Association of Art Museum Directors. Presently, Andy maintains a consulting practice that specializes in “interim directorships” from Longboat Key (RAM Museum Consulting).  Andy has been and continues to serve on local, state and regional grant panels and art organization boards.  In July 2008, Andy was appointed to, and continues to serve, Sarasota’s Public Art Committee.

H. MICHAEL BUSH

Treasurer of the Board

Michael is President of Home Resources, Inc. and has held senior executive positions in Europe and the United States for Exxon Mobil and other smaller publicly traded companies.  Michael is a CPA and serves as Treasurer for WBTT.  Boards that Michael has served on include: the Sarasota Film Festival, American Red Cross, and various downtown Sarasota business associations.

DR. BARBARA (“BOBBI”) LORRY

Secretary of the Board

Dr. Lorry, a psychologist licensed in Florida and Pennsylvania, relocated to Sarasota in 2002 from Philadelphia where she was a member of the Bryn Mawr College’s Psychology Department.  Dr. Lorry was also a consultant with the College Board and the National Board of Medical Examiners. She has had a psychotherapy practice in Sarasota since 2003.  In addition to her practice, Dr. Lorry is a member of the Steering Committee of Embracing Our Differences.  She is responsible for the training and scheduling of docents for Sarasota Season of Sculpture exhibits, as well as, Intersections, the current exhibit of sculpture in downtown Sarasota.

DR. LARRY THOMPSON

Adviser Emeritus

Dr. Larry Thompson has been the President of Ringling College of Art & Design since July 1999.  Larry is known as a visionary community leader and is passionate about the arts and education.  Currently, Larry is Chair of the Sarasota County Arts Council, leadership spokesman for the Tamiami Cultural District Project and is on the boards of Coastal Behavioral healthcare, Community Health Corporation for Sarasota Memorial Hospital and the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.  He currently serves on the newly formed Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County Partners Council and is the Chair of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (“AICAD”) Executive Committee and serves on the President’s Council of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (“ICUF”).

BOARD MEMBERS

Scott Anderson
Scott Anderson joined the staff of Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice as its first gift planning officer in April 2007.  In this role, Scott works exclusively with community philanthropists and their professional advisors to create customized, tax-advantaged planned gifts that benefit the causes and organizations these donors care about.  Scott brings a broad knowledge of the region’s nonprofit community from his previous work as senior account executive for Herald-Tribune Media Group’s Custom Publications Department.  He also worked for many years in various product and sales management positions for GTE.  Scott volunteers his leadership for numerous community organizations.

Cherie Binger
Cherie began her legal career in Washington DC as a trial attorney with the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) where she prosecuted numerous high profile cases in both Federal Court and administrative hearings.  Upon leaving the FTC Cherie went into private practice where she joined the prestigious law firm of Bryan Cave and became a Hearing Officer for the University of Maryland. Since moving to Florida, Cherie has continued to focus on general civil and commercial litigation with the Sarasota law firm of Judd Ulrich Scarlett Wickman & Dean PA.

Carol Camiener
Carol’s board experience started while living in the metropolitan Detroit area where she was very active with The Detroit Institute of Arts, and co-chair to the Annual Fundraiser by the Detroit Public Television Station.  Presently, Carol is a Trustee of Ringling School of Art & Design.  Being an avid art glass collector, Carol helped to create and co-chair the Southwest Florida Glass Art Alliance and is a national board member and Membership Chair of the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass.  Besides her busy board work Carol is also a committee member of the Longboat Key Arts Center.

Ruth Kreindler
Ruth served on the corporate boards for Emcore Corporation, the developer and manufacturer of Turbo Disc Technology used for building advanced materials, and Its-About-Time Inc., publisher of math and science textbooks and materials for high schools. She served on the county supervisor advisory council and for building committees (sometimes gopher, sometimes chairperson of town organizations), and organized national and international programs and events. Ruth was a senior designer at MCM, and then president of InterQuad Commercial Designers and Planners (New York / London). She developed art programs for various companies and was assistant to the director for NYC and Westchester galleries. Ruth is also a licensed commercial real estate broker.

Howard Rooks
Howard has a vast real estate background and knowledge.  In the 1960′s, he founded Mount Vernon Realty in the Washington DC market.  The company expanded over the years to 35 offices throughout the US with 2,500 agents.  In 1991, Howard sold the company and “retired” to Sarasota where he became the founding partner of St Armand’s Rooks Morris Real Estate.  Rooks Morris Real Estate was later sold to Prudential Palms where today Howard is involved in the real estate development and consulting services of Prudential Palms. Howard has served on the Board of Trustees for East Carolina University, endowed a Chair for the School of Business, and endowed a scholarship for one student each year that runs indefinitely and has had a lecture hall named after him.

Tom Savage
Tom came to Sarasota in 1971 and has been with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department for 23 of his 39 years here.  Tom is an ordained minister that has served various churches from Belmont, Massachusetts to Elgin, Illinois to Madison, Wisconsin and then in 1971 Tom came to the Unitarian Church of Sarasota where he served them until 1979.

Rita Shewer
Rita came to Sarasota after spending a number of years in New York City.  While living in New York, Rita was quite active in her daughters PTA, and on the board of several not-for-profit organizations including the national Council of Jewish Women.  A main interest in the city was with one of the largest social service agencies in New York – Self-Help Community Services where she was on the Executive Board for many years besides continuing her volunteer work with the group.  Sarasota Season of Sculpture is so very fortunate to have an individual of Rita’s experience on our Board of Directors.

V. Peter Schneider
From 1988 thru 2009, Peter served as the Deputy City Manager and Interim City Manager for the City of Sarasota.  Before this Peter was the Human Resources Director in the City of Gainesville, Florida.  His other senior-level management experience includes positions with Alachua County, Florida; Ramsey County, Minnesota; and the City of St. Paul, Minnesota.  Peter has served on a number of boards and committees in Sarasota including: the Downtown Partnership, NAACP Executive Committee, YMCA Achievers Program, the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce to just name a few.  He has also served on a select State Committee that examined city and county regulation of cellular communication towers.

Dr. John D. Welch
In 1998, after 30 years, John retired from his urology practice (Florida Urology Specialists) that he founded when he relocated from Tampa to Sarasota in 1970.  John has been involved with the Sarasota arts and sports scenes for many years.  He has been an active board member with the Asolo Repertory Theatre, Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Sarasota Film Festival, serves on Advisory Boards of Sarasota County’s Film Commission, Florida Film and Entertainment Council and the Blue Ocean Film Festival.  Dr. John is also a member of multiple medical organizations, including the Florida Medical Association and the Florida Urology Society where he served as President in 1986.
